Upon departing from Whitefish, weâll head straight to beautiful St. Ignace / Straits of Mackinac. Another 4 dives (2 days) will take you to see perhaps one of the largest shipwrecks in the Great Lakes. The Cedarville (40â - 106â), built in 1927, was a 488â steel steamer that sunk in a dense fog when struck by another ship. The wreck is fully intact and laying on its starboard side listing at about 45 degrees from being upside down. The newest wreck to be discovered in the area is the William Young (120â); discovered during a search and recover mission in the Straits in August 2002. The ships wheel is still intact and lashed to the deck. A must see! Additional wrecks in the area include the Minneapolis (124â), Maitland (85â), Eber Ward (111â - 143â) and William H. Barnum (58â - 75â) to name a few. Those divers that are interested can work on their deep diver certification while diving here.
