What wreck is this? - Dewit2it - 01-18-2009 This wreck is on the north side of Redcliff in the Indian reservation. Re: What wreck is this? - MNDiveLady - 01-18-2009 I had to zoom out a little to see Basswood Island...My map shows three wrecks in that vicinity. The Fedora, a propeller driven ship that burned. Located 1 mile north of Red Cliff. (9-1901, L282', 1,848 t,) No Cargo. Partly above water. (Could Be!) The Cormorant, a propeller driven ship took fire off North side of Basswood Island, it was beached then raised and towed to Bayfield where it was stripped of usable components then abandoned in Red Cliff Bay close to Ottawa. (10-1907, L 218', 877 gt.) The Ottawa, a wrecking tug burned at achor in the north end of Red cliff Bay. (11-1909, L 151', 420t, Depth 25') Info from: Lake Superior Dive Chart, Midwest Explorers League, 3641 N. Marshfield Ave. Chicago, IL 60613 Paul W. Ackerman Copyright Oct 1, 1990. Re: What wreck is this? - Dewit2it - 01-18-2009 Thanks! I don't have any books on wrecks in that part of the lake. Re: What wreck is this? - Tamara Thomsen - 01-18-2009 It's the Fedora. Re: What wreck is this? - MNDiveLady - 01-18-2009 Thanks Tamara! That sounds like a great book, excellent details! The web site is stunning too! Re: What wreck is this? - Tamara Thomsen - 01-18-2009 The dive guide mentioned in the link above is for an underwater dive slate not a book. If you are interested in a book with descriptions and maps of most of the wrecks in the Apostle Islands, try "By Fire, Storm and Ice" by David Cooper. They will be for sale at the Wisconsin Historical Society booth at both Dive into the Past and Ghost Ships Festival for $20. Re: What wreck is this? - Dewit2it - 01-19-2009 When and where? Re: What wreck is this? - Chris H - 01-19-2009 Not sure about the other show. Re: What wreck is this? - Tamara Thomsen - 01-19-2009 Here is the link to Dive into the Past- the Minneapolis Dive Show: In case you aren't planning on going to either of the shows, I checked the Wisconsin Historical Society publications site and it looks like you can purchase it from our online store: |
