Bonaire - Buddy Dive Resort Jan 23-30, 2010
You couldn't design a better island for diving than Bonaire. The entire island is ringed by a dense fringing reef that, on the leeward side, starts in just 30 feet of water. About 35 yards offshore, the reef drops off into the deep blue, punctuated by occasional mini-walls. In all, there are more than 60 recognized dive sites and, because the reef is so close to shore, you can explore the majority of them without ever boarding a dive boat. Just pick a spot, gear up and wade in. There are even yellow marker stones along the leeward road to help you find choice areas, and most dive packages offer unlimited tanks for shore diving. Temperatures range from the mid-70Fs to mid-80Fs. Expect vis in the high double digits, occasionally soaring to triple digits. Most leeward sites are current-free, but the farther north or south you get from Kralendijk, the more challenging the surf conditions become. Carefully preserved for divers since the 1970s, Bonaire's reefs are home to nearly 300 species of fish, and six of the 10 most diverse dive sites in the Caribbean.
