Has anybody made their own spearguns before?

I've got rather a lot of mahogany left over from some lighting projects and was thinking that I might make one for kicks.
I've seen some old articles about making them but was wondering if anyone had some local experience. I like the idea of a mid-handle design, makes for an easier to balance and carry package.
I've got just about all the woodworking tools I'd need to make it happen already anyway, so it's not a matter of 'easier to just go buy one'.
