Check out the book "Water Baby" by Victoria Kaharl (published 1990). It covers Alvin from the first "mad-scientist idea" (1956) through the discovery of Titanic and the first deep geo-thermal vents. (Wanna know what it's like to get entangled inside the wreck of a nuclear submarine at the bottom of the ocean?)
