Underwater Archaeology Around the World

Thought that some of you would be interested in this presentation at the Wisconsin Historical Society tomorrow evening.

In 2009, Matt Carter won the Rolex Our World Underwater Scholarship- an award given out to only three students worldwide each year studying in the underwater sciences.  This scholarship permitted him to travel the world for one year participating on various submerged archaeological projects around the planet, studying and learning under top archaeologists in the field. 

Matt’s year abroad took him to Spain for the excavation of a 2,800  year-old Phoenician shipwreck, to Lithuania where he participated in the excavation of a Bronze Age village, and to Mexico where he helped with the interpretation of Mayan sites in the villages surrounding Merida.  Matt also spent time assisting in shipwreck documentation with English Heritage, the Western Australian Maritime Museum and the Wisconsin Historical Society.  Matt's presentation will be laced with stories, photos and video of underwater archaeology around the world.

If you don't know Matt already, he has been here for the past 3 months interning with the Wisconsin Historical Society Maritime Preservation and Archaeology Program and will be retruning to New Zealand to complete his Masters in Maritime Archaeology just next week.

I would urge anyone who is able to attend. Not only is Matt very knowledgeable, he is an all-around good guy worth meeting. He was fortunate enough to live a fantasy of any diver as a result of his Rolex Award: A year of diving all over the world. He certainly made the best of his opportunity, diving a variety of projects and experiencing a wide range of cultures. If you can understand his crazy Kiwi accent you are bound to enjoy this presentation. We will miss him when he returns home!
